Exercise as Self-Care

Exercise can be either a dreadful activity or a wonderful release. Most people identify exercise as a form of weight loss. However, exercise does not have to be about weight loss. Exercise can be simply a way to care for your body and relax your body. The mind and body are very connected and it is important to take care of both. If one or the other is neglected then our bodies and even our life may become out of balance.

Some examples of exercise include going for a walk, playing a sport, doing yoga, lifting weights, practicing martial arts or even trying one of those Boot Camp things they have on Groupon. Any one of these exercises or others that you can think of or find on YouTube, can benefit your life greatly. Unfortunately, injuries can stop a person from getting their body in motion. As we all know, a body in motion stays in motion. So, what do you do if you have an injury and you can’t go run a 5K? The answer is low-impact exercises. These include things like the elliptical, a stationary bike, and swimming. Whatever it is that you can find that works with your body will help you in the long run.

The effects exercise has on the body are numerous. A couple of benefits of exercising include increasing your serotonin (the happy neurotransmitter), being exposed to natural light if you go outdoors, increasing your energy levels, feeling those endorphins, and having an outlet for intense emotions such as anger or anxiety. If any of these sound like something you want, then exercise is for you.

Additionally, there are long-term benefits of exercise that have nothing to do with your size. Big or small, if you exercise then in the long run you will have a decreased risk of heart disease. Another benefit includes increased mobility later in life and improved metabolism. Go ahead ask your doctor if exercise is right for you. I bet the answer is yes.

The depiction of exercise in media can be a bit daunting. The key is to remember that no two people are like in their ability to exercise or in what exercises are fun for them. It is important to remember that the more we care for a body the more at ease our minds can be.
