Navigating the New Normal

GUEST BLOG POST

Brought to you by Don Tibbitts, MS, Licensed Professional Counselor a special guest blog post. Don tells us how he is coping with all the scary changes right now.

This is an anxious time for most of us; uncertainty is very unsettling as we navigate this “New Normal”.  Here are some things I am doing to promote good self-care during this time.

  1. Stay Present Focused– All is well at this moment for me; anxiety comes from “future tripping”.  It’s helpful to realize that all my needs are currently met.
  2. Take some deep, cleansing breaths– Breathe deeply through the abdomen.  Research shows that several deep breaths through the abdomen will calm the body while shallow breathing through the chest heightens anxiety.
  3. Take a media break– I have to do this for my sanity.  Too much depressing news and lies that I cannot control.  Just stepping away for a while is good for my mental health.
  4. Do something that is within my control– So much feels out of control at this time.  Changing my focus to something I can control provides a helpful distraction and some measure of security.
  5. Connect with my Higher Power– This situation makes me realize how little control I have; connecting with my Higher Power provides peace of mind and reassurance that God is my source.
  6. Help others– Reach out, donate to a cause to help less fortunate, try to exhibit more grace toward others during this stressful time.
