A guilty pleasure is generally something that others see as unusual or weird. These can range from musical tastes to food or collections. Just because your indulgence may be unique to you does not mean it is unhealthy. Over indulgence might lead to unhealthy habits in some cases if not used in moderation. Here are some common guilty pleasures, some may seem normal to you and others totally off the wall. For all of them, we do not need to be ashamed:
- Sweets – My favorite is chocolate chip cookie dough! If it is not eaten every day or in large quantities, sweets can be enjoyed without shame.
- Adult films – Although there are studies indicating the dangers of adult films, watching one occasionally, is not bad.
- Cheesy TV shows – For me this is the ones I watched when I was a teenager. Others may be embarrassed to admit binge watching shows like Glee. Whatever your TV choices, enjoy!
- Odd songs – With so many genres out there, not everyone is going to like the same things. You may be the one in your group of friends that still likes an old Britney Spears song or N’sync. My odd songs are those little kid Raffi songs, having a nephew I have an excuse to listen to those.
- Lottery tickets – Gambling can be a dangerous road to go down. The occasional lottery ticket can be fun though. About once a year when I’m on a road trip I’ll get a dollar scratch off. Sometimes you are out a dollar, other times you got 9 more. I use that for more road snacks.
- Playing dress up – Little girls are not the only ones who try on clothes and strut in front of the mirror. Men or women may enjoy going through their closet to create new outfits or going to a store and trying on the latest styles.
- Cigars – Most people are turned off by the smoking aroma and bad taste cigars leave in the mouth. For others, a nice cigar (maybe even a Cuban) are a rarity to cherish. They are not just for old men in darkened rooms, anyone can enjoy a nice cigar on occasion.
In my opinion, guilt is an emotion we do not have to ruminate on. Never feeling guilt is impossible, but beating yourself up about it is not productive. A few of the examples above can be very unhealthy if overdone. Enjoy life and occasionally indulge yourself, that is what’s healthy. The infrequency will increase your enjoyment.
