Music has been known to have several benefits. Throughout the years a plethora of genres have develop to accommodate all tastes. Some people prefer composing, others playing, and most of all listening. Below are some of the benefits of incorporating music into our everyday lives. 

  • Calming – Some songs the mind and allow tranquility to wash over us. With or without lyrics depending on your preference, it can be like meditation.
  • Focus – School and work can be difficult with a million things going on. Classical music is most known for its abilities to help focus and retain information. I can use other types of music though to help me focus on writing things such as this blog.
  • Anger outlet – I often encourage my clients to use their favorite music as a healthy way to express anger. It can be done at home or in your car. I enjoy blasting music in the car and singing as loud as possible. Playing your favorite instrument can also be an outlet for anger just by completely immersing yourself in playing.
  • Increased energy – Have you ever been working out and a certain song comes that just peps you up? I do not know why this is, but many people report an instant surge of energy when a song plays.
  • Reduce stress – Dancing around to your favorite music is a great way to release stress. Everyone knows exercise reduces stress, but something that can get boring. This is why we have things like Zumba to let out all the stressors of life.
  • Activate brain – Studies have shown that playing musical instruments activate different areas of the brain. Neurons are always forming new connections in our minds so even if you do not play, maybe consider learning an instrument. It is never too late to learn a new skill.
